Story
Kyle and Stan's friendship is strained after they discover a man frozen in an ice cave and argue about what is best for their "discovery".
Description
After watching a TV show about a wild Australian tracker who sticks his thumb up wild animals' buttholes, the boys decide to hunt for crocodiles. Kyle falls down a very deep hole and when Stan attempts a to rescue him, they discover a man frozen in some ice. The body is brought to Dr. Mephesto.
Stan and Kyle have a serious argument over what to name the ice man, the former favoring "Gorak" and the latter favoring "Steve". Mephesto discovers that the ice man is still alive and thaws him out. He's from the year 1996, about 32 months earlier. Mephesto treats him like a discovery from another era and the ice man is displayed in a special habitat that fitted out to look like 1996. A conveyor belt trundles visitors past. It also drags Kenny to his death.
The ice man hates the way he's being treated, as do Stan and Kyle. They put aside their disagreement until later while they help him escape. Meanwhile the ice man, whose real name is Larry, learns his wife has remarried and has two children. Realizing he can't survive in this new reality, he accepts the boys' suggestion to take a train to Des Moines, which is supposedly three years behind the rest of the world.
The boys free Larry and get him to the train station where chaos ensues. Kyle and Stan resume their argument and get into a fistfight. The FBI with the aid of the Australian Outback Guy attempt to capture Larry. The Australian Outback Guy actually does catch him and sticks his thumb in his butthole. Finally, Larry escapes by helicopter and Outback Guy is hacked to pieces by its blades.
Stan and Kyle finally bury the hatchet. Cartman tries to put his thumb in a cow's butthole, but the animal sits on him.
What I Learned Today
"You boys have really shown me the true meaning of friendship. You didn't care about anything but my happiness. You put me in front of yourselves, and that's what true friendship is all about."

Where Did The Idea Come From
This episode parodies the late Steve Irwin and his television series The Crocodile Hunter.
Pop Culture References
Shout Outs
The Australian Outback Guy is of course Steve Irwin, who was just beginning to catch on in the US as the Crocodile Hunter.
Kyle wants to call the ice man Steve because he thinks he looks like Colonel Steve Austin from the sci-fi television series The Six Million Dollar Man.
When the boys find the ice man, Cartman says "this is just like that one movie where John Travolta and that French chick were doing it all summer long, and then they went back to school and sang songs about Grease Lighting". He's referring to the movie musical Grease, which has absolutely nothing to do with an ice man.
When trying to buy a train ticket, Kyle says "We have to get him to Des Moines or else he's gonna melt away." Stan yells back, "that's Frosty, you stupid butthole!"
At the end of the episode Cartman says "Be very very quiet. I'm hunting crocodiles". This is in parody of the Loony Tunes character Elmer Fudd who usually says "Be vewy vewy quiet, I'm hunting wabbits" while hunting for Bugs Bunny.
The ice man's habitat is full of references to the year 1996. There are movie posters for Fargo and "ID4" (production nickname for Independence Day), as well as a Hunchback of Notre Dame blanket in the ice man's habitat. There's also a "Re-Elect Clinton" poster, in reference to the presidential election between Bill Clinton and Bob Dole. Finally, the news headline on the side of the computer desk says "Flight 800 plunges into the sea", a reference to a Boeing 747 plane crash that occurred in 1996 near East Moriches, New York.
Pwn'd
Music from the band Ace of Base is pumped into the ice man's habitat because Mephesto states "their primitive drumming soothed his people's tempers".
Dr. Mephesto determines that the ice man's clothes are from clothing company Eddie Baur, which he hasn't seen anyone wear since 1996.
Bonus Factoids
Pointless Observations
- Dr. Mephesto has an ass-shaped door buzzer.
- Singer Marilyn Manson performs a snippet of Chef's "Stinky Britches" about halfway through the episode and during the closing credits.
- The ice man's enclosure is a couple of doors down from Mephesto's five-assed monkey, first seen in "An Elephant Makes Love to a Pig".
- When Kyle falls in the hole, Stan says "Good job Cartman! You killed Kyle!", allowing Kenny a rare opportunity to deliver the "You bastard!" line. Later, Stan says "Oh my God! They revived Gorak!" and Kyle adds "You bastards!" Kyle doesn't add his signature "You bastards!" after Kenny is killed due to his anger at Stan.
- A-113 is the tail number on the helicopter Larry flies off in at the end of the episode. A-113 or simply A113 is an inside joke created by alumni of the California Institute of the Arts. The code appears in many Western cartoons, live action shows and video games as Easter eggs, most famously in every Pixar film.
